Ricky's Blog
OK here’s my first blog. Been trying to get inspired and here it is. Heard the new Matchbox 20 song on the jukebox (dated reference) while I was packing up after my Katey’s gig. The problem with today’s music is (drumroll please) ((bdbdbdbdbdbbdbd)) bands have too long in between recordings!! I was never a Matchbox fan, but their first load of steaming “hits” at least had a sound. Now this new song sounds like them trying to be the Killers--who I like. But I don’t want to hear Rob Thomas (the male Celine Dion of our time) singing that shit. If bands put out an album, let’s say every year and a half, maybe they could be true to themselves and keep a consistent or at least identifiable sound.
Let me take you back dear blog readers. The year is 1967 and the Beatles have not put out any new music in nine months! They have been in the studio for the last four weeks and have recorded two new tunes for their upcoming album. The music world is in a tizzy (dated reference #2) thinking they are A--dead (at least Paul), B-- inspirationally dried up, or C-- high on drugs. Well as we all know none of these were true (wink, wink). They had just recorded Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane, which were to be included on Sgt. Pepper’s but instead were released as a two sided single (dated reference #3). Today the Beatles would have saved those songs for a year and a half until Timbaland was free to produce them and make them sound like every other song (with a rap by Ja Rule).
So here’s my idea: Bands – record 30 minutes worth of shit and put it out every year. It might still be crap but it won’t be dated crap. rr – 11/6/07
